What a checksum can tell you

A checksum is useful for detecting many data-entry errors, but a mathematically valid value may still be unassigned, inactive or unrelated to the item being reviewed. Use checksum tools as data-quality controls rather than proof of identity.

Frequently asked questions

Does checksum validation prove an identifier was officially assigned?

No. It only checks mathematical and formatting rules. Confirm assignment and ownership with the appropriate official source.

Can generated IMEI-style values be used on a real device?

No. Generated values are test fixtures only and must never be used to alter, clone or impersonate a real device identity.

Why validate identifiers before import?

Checksum validation catches many typing, transcription and data-migration errors before they reach catalogues, publishing systems or test datasets.
