Design for recognition at very small sizes

A favicon is not a miniature poster. Use a simple symbol, strong contrast and generous spacing so the mark remains recognisable in browser tabs, bookmarks and mobile shortcuts.

Use a square source

Start with a centred square image to avoid unexpected cropping.

Simplify detail

Remove tiny text and fine decoration that disappears at 16 or 32 pixels.

Image tools work with pixel dimensions, colour channels, metadata and format-specific compression. A smaller file can come from fewer pixels, stronger compression, reduced metadata or a more efficient format. These choices affect sharpness, transparency, colour consistency and future editability in different ways.

Pixel dimensions

Width and height determine on-screen detail and usually have the largest effect on file size.

Lossy vs lossless

Lossy formats discard visual information; lossless formats preserve exact decoded pixels but may remain larger.

Alpha transparency

PNG and WebP can store transparent pixels, while JPG replaces them with a solid background.

Colour and metadata

ICC profiles, EXIF orientation and camera metadata can affect appearance, rotation and privacy.
